Dharma Productions, headed by Karan Johar and Yash Raj Films headed by Aditya Chopra, have been two of the biggest and leading production houses in Hindi cinema for years now. For decades, they have been the frontrunners of some of the biggest Bollywood films. The big-budget production houses are known to spare no expense in their wealthy extravaganzas. So much so that they have become synonymous with high budgets and lavish films. However, recently, actor Vikram Kapadia, who has worked with both banners, has levied some serious allegations against the two biggies.

Vikram Kapadia who was seen in projects like Made In Heaven, The Night Manager, and Yodha among others, called Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra’s production houses as egoistic and exposed how they exploit newcomers.

Vikram Kapadia calls YRF and Dharma Egoistic

Actor Vikram Kapadia, in his recent interview with Bollywood Now, spilt the beans on how the big studios pay actors. He said, “Yash Raj and Dharma have this ego that we are Yash Raj and Dharma so we will pay you a little less but you should be happy because we are paying you. I think they do that with everyone. I think that’s why actors are concerned.”

However, he went on to add that even though the remuneration is low, there is never a delay in payment from them. He stated, “Yash Raj paid me well as a writer but hoga na kahi pe that hum Yash Raj hain. You are getting a role, they are giving you a break. So maybe the value is a little less but they never delay in payment.”

Karan Johar on paying actors less

In the past, the Dharma Productions boss Karan Johar had spoken about the ‘high cost’ of performers. In an interview with Screen Magazine, the director mentioned, “The entourage cost is the least of our worries. It’s the main remuneration of the actors that has to be looked into. It’s very critical for all the actors to understand exactly how the times are, how the climate of our movies are, how tough and difficult it is to manoeuvre through making a motion picture of any magnitude or size.”

Notably, Serum Institute’s Aadar Poonawala acquired a 50% stake in Dharma Productions earlier this week. He secured the deal for an investment of ₹1000 crore in the production house. Post this, Karan and Poonawala arrived together at Manish Malhotra’s Diwali bash on Tuesday.
