Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has been doing surprisingly well as an actor of late. The man was lauded for his adroit character projection in South Indian star Vijay Sethupathi’s critically acclaimed suspense drama, Maharaja. The Gangs of Wasseypur director has been seen playing the antagonist and supporting roles in full-length features over the last few years. In one of his latest interviews, acclaimed movie maker has divulged how he bagged the role of a notorious villain in the sleeper hit Maharaja.
Anurag shared that it was very important for him to play the part in Maharaja since he was in a deep financial crisis at the time.
How Anurag Kashyap was helped by Vijay Sethupathi
During a conversation with one of India’s leading newspapers, Anuraj Kashyap opened up about doing roles in South Indian films. The filmmaker-actor revealed that he chanced upon Vijay Sethupathi when he was working on the film Kennedy. He then went on to share how he ended up playing the antagonist in the Tamil film Maharaja.
Kashyap said, “After Imaikka Nodigal, I turned down a lot of South films. Offers kept coming every other day. Then, during post-production for Kennedy, I kept bumping into Vijay Sethupathi at my neighbour’s place. He told me there’s this amazing script they’ve been trying to get to me. I initially said no. But he helped me find something in Kennedy, so I gave him a ‘Thank You’ card in the film.”
The Ugly helmer also opened up about sharing the financial problems with the Master actor, especially as he wished to get his daughter Aaliyah married. He added, “I told him, ‘I need to get my daughter married next year, and I don’t think I can afford it.’ And Vijay said, ‘We’ll help you.’ And that’s how Maharaja happened.”

Anurag Kashyap played the role of the chief antagonist in one of South India’s most acclaimed 2024 releases, Maharaja. He shared the screen with Vijay Sethupathi in the motion picture. The film, also starring Mamta Mohandas and Natty Subramanian in crucial roles, turned out to be a sleeper hit at the box office. It was later released in China, where it ended up doing reasonable business. Meanwhile, Kashyap’s daughter, Aaliyah, got happily married to her longtime flame Shane Gregoire in December 2024 in Mumbai. Several Bollywood and South Indian celebrities graced the ceremonies.
