There is no doubt about the fact that Priyanka Chopra is Bollywood’s proudest export to the West. The name that she made for herself in the West through her canny marketing is admirable. As is her impact in the popular American series Quantico.
But that apart, her film assignments in Hollywood so far appear to be uninspiring. While her Hollywood debut Baywatch was among the worst franchise films in living memory and her performance wasn’t exactly lauded by critics, Priyanka is now seen in the trailer of her second Hollywood film A Kid Like Jake. While this moving story of a couple (played by Claire Danes and Jim Parson) trying to cope with their transgender child is dominated by Danes, Parson and Octavia Spencer, Priyanka playing a friend of the family has a fleeting appearance in the trailer with one sentence to utter.
I sincerely hope she has much more to do in the actual film. But given our Bollywood actors’ track record in Hollywood we don’t have much reason to hope for ample space in A Kid Like Jake for Priyanka. Which is a pity, really. Because she has so more much to give as an actor. Regrettably Priyanka has hit a roadblock so soon in her journey westwards. Now it’s too late for her to turn back and seek plum roles at home. Bollywood has moved on to Alia Bhatt’s generation. Even the highly regarded Deepika Padukone is finding it hard to go beyond Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
