Romantic-comedy film Dream Girl, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Nushrat Bharucha in the lead roles, hit the screens on 13th September and has been pulling in huge crowds over its first weekend. The film is also the latest Bollywood movie to be leaked online by notorious piracy website, Tamilrockers, for free streaming and download by the site’s users. Hit by piracy within two days of its release, Dream Girl is just one of countless Bollywood, Hollywood and South Indian films which have been victims of similar piracy, resulting in losses for filmmakers as many movie fans are able to watch most of the highly-anticipated films for free at home instead of heading to the ticket windows.
Big movies such as Avengers: Endgame, Zero, 2.0, Simmba, Aquaman, Kabir Singh, Chhichhore and Maari 2 have been leaked over the recent past by Tamilrockers. Some of the movies are leaked within a few hours of their release. The website is officially banned by the court but continues to operate illegally due to frequent changes in the URL and easy access via proxy servers.
However, moviegoers have been heading to the cinema to watch Dream Girl, which has been performing quite well at the box office and has been declared as Ayushmann Khurrana’s biggest opener, as it earned INR 10.05 crore on the first day of its release. Occupancy in the cinemas improved further on the second day and the film collected approximately INR 15 crore on Saturday, as per the initial box office reports. In the film, Ayushmann portrays an unemployed actor Karamvir Singh, who takes up a job at a friendship call centre and pretends to be a female on the phone, flirting with lonely male callers. Ayushmann’s performance and the film have received good reviews from critics and fans.
