Arun Jaitley, Former Finance Minister of India, Passes Away: Bollywood Celebrities and Others Share Condolences

Arun Jaitley, former finance minister and senior BJP leader, passed away at the age of 66. B-Town celebrities shared their condolences.

Arun Jaitley — a senior BJP (Bhartiya Janata Party) leader and Member of Parliament, who served as the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs of the Government of India from 2014 to 2019 — passed away at the age of 66, on Saturday, 24th August, at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where he was undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness. Arun Jaitley was also a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India. He had decided not to join the Modi Cabinet in 2019 due to health issues. The AIIMS shared the news of his death via a press release and condolences started pouring in. Several Bollywood celebrities also took to social media to express their shock and grief at his demise:

Sidharth Malhotra wrote, “Rest in peace #ArunJaitley. Your demise has left a void in the country. My prayers are with the family and loved ones.”


2 States actor Arjun Kapoor said, “Extremely saddened to hear about the loss of #ArunJaitley ji.. My sincere condolences to all the near and dear ones.”

Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar wrote, “#RIPArunJaitley ... the nation mourns a strong and assured leader today....thoughts and prayers with his family and loved ones…"

Anil Kapoor tweeted about his association with the leader, “Met Shri #ArunJaitley Ji almost 20 years back for the first time & have been his admirer ever since. His demise is a huge loss for our nation. Will be truly missed. My heartfelt condolences to the family.”

Ajay Devgan wrote, “Deeply saddened by Arun Jaitleyji’s demise. Admired his  dynamic vision for India; he was a leader I'm happy to have interacted with. My thoughts are with his family in their hour of grief. RIP Arunji”

Riteish Deshmukh’s tweet read, “Deeply saddened by the passing away of Shri #ArunJaitley ji... deepest condolences to the family & loved ones.”

Sunny Deol wrote, “Nation loses another great leader. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.#ArunJaitley"

Chairman India TV and popular anchor, Rajat Sharma tweeted, “#ArunJaitley , my dear and close friend for 5 decades, is no more. In his passing away, #India has lost an able administrator, a fine jurist and an incorruptible politician. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Om Shanti. @arunjaitley"

Veteran Bollywood singer, Lata Mangeshkar wrote, “Deeply saddened by the sad demise of Arun Jaitley ji. A dynamic leader, a thorough gentleman and our former Finance Minister. Very kindly, he had come over to meet me and we spoke for a long time. Will cherish those memories. Heartfelt condolences to the family.”

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer, Virender Sehwag also tweeted about Arun Jaitley’s support in the field of cricket. “Pained at the passing away of #ArunJaitley ji. Apart from having served greatly in public life, he played a huge role in many players from Delhi getting an opportunity to represent India. There was a time when not many players from Delhi got a chance at the highest level. But under his leadership at the DDCA, many players including me got a chance to represent India. He listened to needs of the players & was a problem solver. Personally shared a very beautiful relationship with him,” he said.

Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi wrote that he had “lost a valued friend” and that Arun Jaitley’s “insight on issues and nuanced understanding of matters had very few parallels.”

This month, BJP also lost another senior leader, Sushma Swaraj, who passed away on 6th August, following a sudden cardiac arrest.
