Panipat is an upcoming historical period drama based on the events leading to the Third Battle of Panipat between the Maratha Empire and the Durrani Empire in 1761, which was a turning point in Indian history. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker (best known for Lagaan and Swades), the upcoming film features Sanjay Dutt as Ahmad Shah Abdali, founder of the Durrani Empire and of modern state of Afghanistan; Arjun Kapoor as Sadashivrao Bhau, Commander-in-Chief of the Maratha army; and Kriti Sanon as Parvati Bai, the second wife of Sadashivrao Bhau. The film’s trailer has just been unveiled by Reliance Entertainment. Check out the audience reactions below:

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar was full of praise for the Panipat team and tweeted, “Always been a fan of war movies and @AshGowariker aces this genre! #PanipatTrailer @arjunk26 looks fierce, @kritisanon matches his step well and @duttsanjay makes the perfect villain! Kudos to the team..looking forward!

Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote, “Some trailers demand second/multiple viewing because they win you over... #Panipat trailer is one of those... Ashutosh Gowariker - synonymous with historicals/period films - raises the expectations from the movie... #PanipatTrailer.”

Meanwhile, other Twitter users were also excited to see the trailer. Sudeep Tawde
(@STawdee) said, “Might be best movie of @arjunk26 career Luks good and, @duttsanjay luks damn killer.”

Ajay Sinha (@AjaySinha79) shared similar views, “#PanipatTrailer hits the right chords. Blockbuster trailer! Quiet Surprised actually. Sanju Baba!!! #PanipatTrailer This Historical period drama luks promising.”

Ishita_VD (@ishita2402) praised director Ashutosh and wrote, “Really looking forward to #panipat. Been a fan of Ashutosh sirs work. Jodhaa Akbar and Lagaan are among my most favourite films. Wish this movie is a game changer for @arjunk26 and @kritisanon and you'll shine. All the very best. @AshGowariker #panipattrailer.”

Fans were especially excited to see Sanjay Dutt on screen. Anand Balasubramanian
(@absaysthis) wrote, “Can't wait to see badass @duttsanjay as a baddie again #PanipatTrailer.”

However, some people were not happy with Arjun Kapoor’s casting in the lead role. Siddharth Mathur (@TheSidMathur) tweeted, “Arjun Kapoor's Expression in all his films are SAME SAME and SAME. He is the negative point of #PanipatTrailer. Baaki sab First Class Hai....”

Aakhon Ki Gustakhiyan (@h_hazra) said, “Worst thing about this trailer is Arjun Kapoor. Would have worked wonders if casting of main lead actor would have done right. Sanjay dutt looks lethal #PanipatTrailer.”

A4Aadi (@akki_aditya) predicted the film’s box office performance, saying, “#PanipatTrailer review Everything is great except Arjun Kapoor. Trailer is appealing. Big canvas and huge scale is attractive but casting is looking weak. But story is looking great. Chalegi lekin Arjun ki jagah koi aur hota to daudati….”

Amar Shah (@amarshah30) was not impressed with the trailer and highlighting its slogan ‘The Great Betrayal’, wrote, “If the movie will not be entertaining, don't rush & ask for money back! Statutory warning has been clearly given in its poster! #Panipattrailer.”

In a review of the trailer for Masala.com, Shaheera Anwar pointed out the film’s similarities with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period films such as Bajirao Mastani. She also wrote, “The trailer fails to impress with its effort of grandeur. The battle scenes shows in the 3-minute long clip - which is too long for a trailer - along with the VFX and set designs also look very similar to that of Game of Thrones, but poorly executed. So much so that even the horses shown in the trailer look fake. Even the actors' scenes in the trailer feel like none of them wanted to be there, but were somehow forced to be a part of it.” The movie — which also stars Padmini Kolhapure, Zeenat Aman, Suhasini Mulay,  Kunal Kapoor, Mohnish Bahl, Nawab Shah, Mantra and Krutika Deo, among others, in vital roles — is slated to release on 6th December 2019.
