There is yet another war brewing in Bollywood. This time it’s between maverick director Anurag Kashyap and producer-journalist-columnist Pritish Nandy. This one’s over the title of a film. Now, Pritish Nandy owned the title called Womaniya. The word became popular when Anurag used it in a song in his classic Gangs of Wasseypur.
Turns out it was a title that Anurag wanted to use but Pritish has it. Now, Anurag wrote a rather nasty and strong tweet in which he accused Nandy of ‘extortion’ by asking for INR 1 crore to part ways with the title. Dripping with sarcasm Kashyap wrote, “So we have decided to not pay the extortion sum of 1 crore to @PritishNandy. He can sit on the title and warm it and hope for it to hatch into something worthwhile for his company for once.”
Anurag wrote the tweet in context of announcing his new film, curiously titled Saand Ki Aankh, co-starring Bhumi Pednekar and Taapsee Pannu. One assumes this was the earlier Womaniya.
Reacting sharply to the Kashyap ’s nasty insinuation and denying the extortion allegation Pritish Nandy says, “Anurag Kashyap and I have not met nor spoken in over 20 years. Yes, we at Pritish Nandy Communications own the title Womaniya which we are using in a film. There is no question of selling or giving it away. I cannot ask for anything from a person I do not know and have not met except once 20 years ago.”
