Anupam Kher vs Naseeruddin Shah: Why the Ugly Spat between Bollywood Veterans has Got the Town Talking

The ugly spat between Bollywood veterans, Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah has become the talk of the town. It all started when the latter hurled rather derogatory remarks at Kher in a recent interview with The Wire. Shah was discussing his views on the much-talked about and controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). While weighing in on his opinion, he condemned film industry insiders who have been lending full support to the government. During the course of the conversation, Shah gave Kher’s example but his words did not sit down too well with the Hotel Mumbai star or his fans. Not one to hold back, Kher responded to Shah’s comments in a recent video clip and that is where the war of words became worse.
"Someone like Anupam Kher has been very vocal. I don't think he needs to be taken seriously. He is a clown and any number of his contemporaries from NSD and FTII can attest to his psychopathic nature. It is in his blood, he can't help it," Shah said. Kher retorted via his official twitter handle, adding that Shah should not be taken seriously due to his 'substance' use.
Actually you’re high on the most dangerous drug in this world which is desire for power.
Kash aap is nasheeli padarth ki jagah wahi padarth lete jo Nasiruddin Shah lete hain.
Hitler desired for power & I don’t think he ever smoked a joinit... https://t.co/09FToV1zHb— Kunal Kamra (@kunalkamra88) January 24, 2020
pic.twitter.com/M4vb8RjGjj— Anupam Kher (@AnupamPKher) January 22, 2020
Kher said, "Though I have never said anything bad about you but now I will. You have spent your entire life in frustration, despite achieving so much. If you can criticise Dilip Kumar Sahab, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Shah Rukh Khan and Virat Kohli, then I'm sure I'm in great company. He mentioned that if Shah gets "some headlines" by criticising him, then it would be his gift to him. Kher ended his over one-minute long video by saying "And do you know what is there in my blood? Hindustan. Just understand this".
Mr.Naseeruddin Shah : I am one of the contemporaries of Anupam Kher. I have known him for 47 years and more. I was doing my law and @AnupamPKher and @KirronKherBJP were studying theatre under the legendary Director Balwant Gargi. pic.twitter.com/NLjY140k1H— Governor Swaraj (@governorswaraj) January 22, 2020
Anupam is an honest, upright and a self made man. I saw Kirron on stage when she did "Desire under the Elms" in 1971. She was an ace Badminton player. I think she was India Champion. She is M.A (English literature) First Class First. So was her sister Kanwal Thakur Singh.— Governor Swaraj (@governorswaraj) January 22, 2020
While some came to Kher’s defence, others stood by Shah. Swaraj Kaushal, former Mizoram Governor and husband of BJP veteran Sushma Swaraj, slammed Shah for attacking Kher and calling him a "clown". He tweeted, "This country gave you all the name, fame and money. Yet you are a disillusioned man. You married outside your religion. No one ever said a word. Your brother became Lt. General of the Indian Army. Have you not been given more than an equal opportunity. Yet you are unhappy.” Comedian Kunal Kumra defended Shah to say the least. Reposting Kher’s video on the micro-blogging site, he captioned the post, “Anupam ji, Actually you’re high on the most dangerous drug in this world which is desire for power. Kash aap is nasheeli padarth ki jagah wahi padarth lete jo Nasiruddin Shah lete hain. Hitler desired for power & I don’t think he ever smoked a joint.” What are your thoughts on their heated exchange? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
