Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi is Better Than Padmaavat. This is How
Gangubai Kathiawadi is Alia Bhatt’s first collaboration with filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, as their previous project Inshallah was shelved
Bollywood filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for his attention to detail and presenting luxury and grandeur on screen. Most of his films, such as Ram Leela, Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat, have had very lavish and colourful sets. Now, as per a report on an entertainment portal, the filmmaker is planning to take things a notch further with his upcoming film, tentatively titled Gangubai Kathiawadi, which stars Alia Bhatt in the lead role. Gangubai might be Sanjay’s most grand film till date. As per the report, a source said that Alia was ‘completely awestruck by the magnanimity of the sets’ and added, “There is a lot of fine detailing that has gone into the making of the set and it is bigger than what anyone would have ever since.”
Gangubai Kathiawadi is based on a book by journalist Hussain Zaidi, titled Queens of Mumbai, which was based on the lives of sex workers in Kamathipura. The film follows the story of an infamous lady don of Mumbai, who was also a courtesan, a drug peddler, a hitman and ran a sex racket. Alia -- who was supposed to work with Sanjay in Inshallah, a project that got shelved recently -- is playing the titular role in the film and this will be her first collaboration with Sanjay.
According to some reports, Ajay Devgn -- who worked with Sanjay in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam around 20 years ago, alongside Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai -- will be making a special appearance in the film. His role and other details of the film are currently under wraps. Bhansali Productions, announcing the film on Twitter in October 2019, had written, “A name you've heard, a story you haven't. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali starring Alia Bhatt in and as Gangubai Kathiawadi, Bhansali Productions and Pen Movies bring you this powerful story on September 11, 2020."
