Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor: A Timeline of the Couple’s Romance

Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor had been dating for quite a while before they made their first public appearance together at Sonam Kapoor’s wedding

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are two of the most talked about celebrities in Bollywood right now. Belonging to star families, Ranbir and Alia are both very much aware of the public attention that celebrities receive. Ranbir started his career in 2007 with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya, whereas Alia made her debut with Karan Johar’s Student of the Year in 2012. Throughout the course of their career, the two starred in several hit films such as Raazi, Rockstar, Sanju, Highway, however, Ranbir and Alia never worked together, until recently. They will finally be seen sharing screen space with each other in Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmastra, which is scheduled to hit screens later this year. The two have also been dating each other for the past year, which makes the film all the more interesting to look out for. While Ranbir is not on social media, Alia does have a large presence. And she’s also often seen sharing photos of her beau, which even makes fans get butterflies. But how did their relationship begin. Here’s a look at their romance timeline so far:

The First Move

Many believe that Alia and Ranbir sparked rumours of their relationship when they made an appearance last year at Sonam Kapoor’s wedding. But that’s still years after the two were first introduced to each other. In a 2014 episode of Koffee with Karan, Alia first expressed her fondness of the actor. She said, “I remember the first time I spoke to Ranbir. You, Karan Johar, called him up when Rockstar just released and you said, 'Here, talk to Ranbir. Tell him how much you love him'. And I spoke so much rubbish. I was just talking non-stop, and he was like, 'Yeah, that's very nice, Alia'.” Soon after Ranbir and Alia starting hanging out together. She then added, “Obviously, I have hung out with him after that. I still think he is really adorable. And I still want to marry him.” The actress also mentioned that everyone except Ranbir knew that she wanted to marry him.

Under the limelight

Four years down the line, the equation between Alia and Ranbir had changed a lot. Photos of the then rumoured couple starting making rounds on the internet, but many still chose to shut them down stating that it was natural to click photos with co-stars as the two had signed up to work with Ayan on Brahmastra. But during the release of Raazi, things took a sudden turn with Alia and Ranbir walked in together – like a Royal couple – at Sonam’s wedding, making their first public appearance together.

Making it official

A few weeks after being photographed together, Ranbir, in an interview with GQ magazine, confirmed that he was dating Alia. He said, “It’s really new right now, and I don’t want to over speak. It needs time to breathe and it needs space. As an actor, as a person, Alia is – what’s the right word? – flowing right now. When I see her work, when I see her act, even in life, what she gives is something that I’m aspiring to for myself. It’s new for us, so let it cook a bit.”

Throughout this time, Alia shared photo of Ranbir and herself on her Instagram. She also wished the actor a happy birthday in September, which a photo that she captioned, “Happy birthday sunshine.” In another Koffee with Karan appearance last year, Alia too spoke about her relationship with Ranbir. She was invited as a guest on the show along with Deepika Padukone – Ranbir’s ex-girlfriend. During the interview, Alia confessed that she had been dating Ranbir for almost a year instead of just a few months, as the public had been assuming.

Getting close to the family

Prior to Ranbir and Alia’s public appearance together, the former’s mother and veteran star, Neetu Singh had also once shared a picture of Alia. Wishing her a very happy birthday, Neetu had written, “Birthday girl in her own world,” – which also sparked some rumours. And after the couple’s confirmation when Rishi Kapoor, Ranbir’s father moved to the US to get treatment for cancer, Alia visited him to wish him a speedy recovery. She was often accompanied by Ranbir on these visits. The Kapoor family even celebrated New Year’s with Alia as Neetu shared a photo that read, “Happy 2019. No resolutions, only wishes this year; less pollution and traffic. Hope that in the future cancer is only a zodiac sign. No hatred, less poverty, loads of love, togetherness, happiness and most importantly good health.”

Vacations and wedding rumours

Earlier last month, Alia and Ranbir also ventured for an African safari together to Kenya as a short break from their hectic work life. The two were spotted together in a few photos from the trip that eventually took over social media.

Several weeks later, a photoshopped picture of the two also started making rounds of the internet. Then, a few days ago, rumours of their wedding were rife as a fake wedding card had emerged. Alia had returned to India after vacationing in London with Ranbir, when she was asked by the paparazzi at the airport about her wedding plans. She didn’t categorically deny her marriage plans but did say, “Udti udti khabar hai aur woh udti hee rahegi.” While the couple hasn’t made an official announcement about their marriage yet, many are assuming that it will take place sometime in 2020. Reports state that Ranbir had already asked Alia’s father, Mahesh Bhatt for her hand in marriage and the filmmaker was ecstatic.
