While Mission Mangal ups the ante and down the competition, it is interesting to note that this is not first time when Akshay Kumar has been a part of film where the heroine has taken centrestage. Here’s looking at Akshay, the chivalrous backstage occupant.
1. Meri Biwi Ka Jawab Nahin (2004)
The only film that Akshay did with Sridevi featured the scintillating Sri in every frame. Akshay claims the film was released in an incomplete form by its producers. But we did get to see how gallantly and obediently he played a secondary role to the superstar heroine. Sridevi was cast as Durga who fights evil while Akshay was her supportive cop-husband fighting boredom, the kind of role Purab Kohli plays to Nithya Menen in Mission Mangal.
2. Sangharsh (1999)
Some regard this as Akshay’s finest performance to date as he took on the role of Anthony Hopkins in The Silence Of The Lambs. But the main character here was clearly Preity Zinta who slayed it as a government agent investigating a serial murderer.
3. Dhadkan (2000)
Dharmesh Darshan’s subverted version of the Ramayan had Akshay and Suniel Shetty as Rama and Ravan. Shilpa Shetty as a slinky Sita occupied centrestage. She was so enthused by the chance to be the central character that she got a nose job done specially for the film. The reason Akshay agreed to do a subservient role to Shilpa could have something to do with their relationship at that time.
4. Bewafaa (2004)
In this monstrously mediocre remake of B R Chopra’s Gumrah, director Dharmesh Darshan gave the main role to Kareena Kapoor. Akshay was her beau whom she sneaked out to meet even after marriage to Anil Kapoor. Naughty girl.
5. Mission Mangal (2019)
Vidya Balan, supported by Tapsee Pannu, Kriti Kulhari, Nithya Menen and Sonakshi Sinha are the primary workforce while Akshay is the mover and shaker. This is primarily a ladies picture-show where Akshay lends his star power to draw the audiences in. Chivalrous or clever? Go figure.
