In Luv Ranjan’s De De Pyaar De, Ajay Devgn stars as Ashish, a fifty-year-old rich and successful man who falls in ‘love' with younger woman Rakul Preet Singh, ‘Ayesha’. Ashish was previously married to Manju (Tabu) and Ashish has grown children who are Ayesha’s age.
Luv Ranjan presents yet another ‘modern’ take on love and romance. Based on the successful formulaic comedies that have been done to death in Hollywood, Luv Ranjan takes his own Bollywood version of the rich, older guy, meeting the young, ‘hotter’ woman and the clichés abound in this upcoming rom-com. Ashish and Ayesha’s romance flies well as Javed Jaffrey, who plays the therapist, gives some real talk about how he is merely looking for a younger woman and Ayesha’s looking for a rich guy.
The story begins to really unfold when all of them come under one roof in what appears to be a vacationing lodge. There are some PG13 jokes, plenty of euphemisms and awkward moments that may serve as good laughing material for audiences in the cinema.
While there is much to be looked forward to in the film when it comes to the performances by Ajay Devgn and Tabu, Rakul Preet fails to impress with her wide-eyed avatar. While her dialogs are filled with double entendres, her portrayal is almost saccharine sweet and thus conflicting with the tone of the character. Also unsavoury to witness is Alok Nath playing Ajay Devgn’s father, who was recently accused of rape by writer/director Vinta Nanda. While De De Pyaar De may prove to be a box office hit, it might end up taking India’s #MeToo movement a step back. For more information on the accusations against Alok Nath, read here.
The film releases on May 17th. It is written by Tarun Jain and Luv Ranjan himself. Akiv Ali has directed the film. He previously collaborated with Luv Ranjan on his films such as Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2.
