Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who last appeared on the silver screen in comedy drama Fanney Khan in 2018 is all set to work with Mani Ratnam in his magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan. At a recent event in Chennai, the actress spoke about working with the filmmaker again. She said, “You all already know. I am working with Mani Ratnam, my guru, in Ponniyin Selvan. It is my honour and privilege to work with him any and every time, throughout my lifetime as an actor. I am really looking forward to it.”
Aishwarya has earlier worked with Mani Ratnam in films like Raavan and Guru. When asked for more details regarding the new big project, Aishwarya said, “I don't think it will be fair to override Mani sir and speak about the project. He's my Guru. I started my first film ever (Iruvar) with him, and even though there's such warmth and familiarity in our professional relationship today, it's his wish to share details with the world whenever he chooses to."
Ponniyin Selvan is the official adaptation of an epic historical novel of the same name, written in Tamil by Kalki Krishnamurthy. Mani Ratnam and other filmmakers had earlier toyed with the idea of making a movie on the classic but shelved those projects due to the large scope of the classic. Now Mani Ratnam has finally decided to go ahead with it and according to sources, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be playing the role of an antagonist, Nandini, the wife of Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar, chancellor and treasurer of the Chola kingdom. A power-hungry woman, Nandini manipulates her husband and plots the downfall of the Chola kingdom. As per reports, Telugu actor Mohan Babu will be seen playing her husband’s role. The movie’s star cast also includes Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Keerthi Suresh, Anushka Shetty, amongst others.
