The Siddharth Anand-helmed film War was certain about facing competition with the Hollywood film Joker, both of which released in cinemas on October 2. While the former continues to make an impressive run at the box office – having raked in INR50 crore on its opening day – the Joaquin Phoenix-starrer has been enjoying a fairly decent opening too with an estimated INR5.7 crore in its kitty. The Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff-starrer was leaked by piracy website Tamilrockers just a day after its release in theatres and now the Todd Phillips blockbuster has fallen victim to the torrent site and is available for free streaming and download.
The nuisance site has been targeting films of all kinds ranging from Telugu to Tamil to Bollywood and Hollywood in the recent past. It goes without saying that directors, producers and actors are being affected by this as revenues continue to decline at the box office.
Joker was one of the most anticipated films of 2019. The trailers and teasers were enough to excite fans world over. Joker was expected to open at INR5 crore and has unsurprisingly surpassed expectations. The previous DC release, Aquaman, made around the same amount on the first day, despite receiving ample flak from critics. The collections of Joker were expected to increase, however nothing can be said now following its leak by Tamilrockers. India Today reviewer Lakshana N Palat gave the film 3.5 stars out of 5. There has been much controversy surrounding Joker, as many critics say that the film triggers violent behaviour, as it is about a man who feels neglected in the world and so he resorts to crime. Joker drew inspiration from Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver and Clockwork Orange, which worried people about inciting violence during the theatrical releases in the 1970s. We hope the film is able to continue creating magic despite the unfortunate leak by piracy websites.
