Pakistani music icons, the legendary Sufi singer Abida Parveen and Qawaal maestro Rahat Fateh Ali Khan have not only held their thrones in the country’s music scene but their influence seems to be spreading all the way to Hollywood as well.
Hollywood’s famous actor Jada Pinjett Smith, wife of acclaimed star Will Smith, recently took to her Instagram handle to express her profound fondness for Pakistan’s sufi music, especially two favourite icons, Abida Parveen and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.
Posting a video of the two artists performing Chaap Tilak on Coke Studio, she wrote, “Abida Parveen and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan are two of my favourite vocalists of Sufi music. This song is called Chaap Tilak and you can go on YouTube to check out the lyrics. They are beautiful.”
The Gotham star also urged followers to read the song’s lyrics – a poem by Amir Khusro.
After showing her followers a glimpse into Pakistan’s eternal vocal crowned heads, many fans were quick to leave a comment on the post, echoing awe of the two music icons. “Wow, this is amazing. I’m am so thankful that you posted this. Such an uplifting gift to my soul”, stated one user.
