Back in the early 2000s, the most talked-about relationship was that of Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor. The love-struck duo was all set to tie the knot in 2002. But just a few months before the wedding, it was called off creating a huge rift between the Bachchans and the Kapoors. What went wrong? Here are some theories.
One of the many theories why the couple called it quits is one of the most common reasons: the financial question. What most people, close to the families say, is that money and financial issues were at the core of the problem. Apparently, Karisma’s mother Babita had a lot to say about the relationship. She was extremely protective about her daughter (which mother wouldn’t be?) and wanted nothing but the best for her. But in her enthusiasm, she may have rubbed people the wrong way.
Babita, a single mother who had brought up Karisma and Kareena on her own, wanted her daughter to be financially secure in the Bachchan household before allowing the marriage.
A rumour goes that Babita wanted the Bachchans to write a part of their property to Karisma. While Abhishek strongly objected to it, his parents were still agreeable to do it for their son’s sake. But apparently, what really made the difference was her desire that Abhishek move into a new house with Karisma after the wedding. This is where Abhishek put his foot down.
“Overnight he called off the wedding. Perhaps the Kapoors didn’t realise that Abhishek would not bear to be parted from his parents even for the most beautiful woman in the world,” says a source close to the Bachchans.
Eventually, after much heartbreak, the wedding was called off creating a huge controversy. But time healed the wounds and Abhishek got involved with and married Aishwarya Rai. Karisma too got married to businessman and family friend Sanjay Kapur though that relationship didn’t last long. They had a rather bitter parting.
