Some dramas pull viewers in with their fresh casting. While there are many talented actors inPakistan, it’s always great to see two talented actors that make theirbeginnings playing more “side” roles slowly work their way into playing lead roles. Such is the case with Hajra Yamin and MirzaZain Baig, two talented actors that have been making their presence knownthrough several dramas over the past two years and are now finally being given leadroles. While this casting is reasonenough, “Aas” is written by Sarwat Nazir, who is known for writing brilliantplays like “Main Abdul Qadir Hoon,” “Sirat E Mustaqeem,” “Besharam” and the currenton-air “Khaas.” This only increases theinterest. Directed by Ali Farhan andproduced by Zeekay Films, the first episode of “Aas” has gone on air on TVOne.
In episode one, we are introduced to Hania (Hajra Yamin) and Safeer(Mira Zain Baig), two college students that are clearly in love with each otherand very respectful of their feelings. WhileHania comes from a well-to-do family, she has a grandmother who comes from anold-fashioned school of thought and constantly expresses her desire to haveHania quit school and get married. Atpresent, Hania’s parents seem very supportive – but for how long? On the other end, Safeer comes from a middle-classbackground and his father has high expectations from him. Because of these expectations, he enrolledhim into a school that is above his affordability level and now the family, which also includes his mother, brother and a catty sister-in-law, isstruggling to pay Safeer’s university fees for his last semester. Throw into the mix a third friend, one who isalso very rich through his family business, but comes from an uneducated backgroundand the initial love triangle of the show is formed. It’s clear that this friend will cause troublefor Safeer and Hania after facing rejection from Hania.
Viewers are also aware that Arsalan Butt will play a negative characternamed Rizwan in coming episodes. It willbe interesting to see how Rizwan will make his entry and come between Hania andSafeer. And what will happen to thisthird friend? The first episode cameacross as breezy enough and while it did deal with some heavier issues, likefinancial burden, it still managed to keep the overall tone lighthearted andthe show felt a little different from the usual. With Sarwat Nazir as the writer and somegreat actors involved, there are some expectations attached to this show.
