Aadai, one of the most anticipated and controversial films of 2019, was released in South India on July 19th. It is set to hit UAE cinemas on July 25th. The film has done remarkably well in the eyes of the film critics. Aadai, meaning clothes, is the story of a free-spirited girl Kamini who wants to live life on her terms but a mishap at an office party turns out to be a life-altering experience for her. The central character Amala Paul who has also done Malyali blockbuster films in the past has been widely applauded for her performance as Kamini in Aadai.
Aadai was expected to do very well on the box office despite mixed reviews from the audiences due to its controversial character. Some people also characterized Aadai as a man’s perception of feminism which is associated only with the freedom of wearing what women want. Regardless, Aadai was one of the most anticipated films of 2019. Unfortunately, the film which was expected to do wonders on the box office has been leaked online by Tamilrockers. Aadai is now available for free downloading which will affect the box office collection to a great deal. Piracy has struck Aadai at a very wrong time.
The film begins with the story of Nangeli and her battle to wear what she wants 200 years ago. After hearing ‘all freedoms we live today have claimed many lives in the past’ we move on to meet Kamini which is portrayed by Amala Paul. According to Amala, she has lived this character for two years and it is very close to her heart. In South Asian films, one mainly comes across women either as cute or bold. There is no in-between. Kamini’s character has many layers the way humans are in real life. Although Amala is a mainstream actress, she risked to go for a role that has a non-glamorous depiction on the film posters: a woman hardly wearing anything and crying for help.
