The general elections in India begin today. It is one of the largest democratic exercises in the world with several parties and candidates in the fray. The month long elections will see polling held in different phases in different states as people go to elect the next Prime Minister of the country. Bollywood may claim to not be too political but there are quite a few stars who are contesting Loksabha elections. Some of them have been quite active on social media too.
1. Hema Malini
Hema Malini, who was trolled big time on social media for her pictures with farmers and on tractors, while campaigning, is contesting the Lok Sabha Election from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. She represents the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
2. Smriti Irani
Former actress who found fame with the soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and current Union Minister Smriti Zubin Irani will be contesting from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency this election.
3. Jaya Prada
‘80s diva Jaya Prada, who joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party last month will be contesting from Rampur Lok Sabha seat. The former SP leader had won the Rampur Lok Sabha seat in 2004 and 2009.
4. Shatrughan Sinha
Shatrughan Sinha will be contesting elections from the Patna Sahib Lok Sabha seat in Bihar on a Congress ticket, from where he a sitting MP of the BJP. Shatrughan had been a long standing member of the BJP but recently lashed out against it.
5. Urmila Matondkar
Rangeela girl Urmila Matondkar is the latest Bollywood star to join politics. The Congress has fielded Urmila Matondkar from Mumbai North Lok Sabha constituency after she joined the party last month.
6. Raj Babbar
The Congress party finalised the candidature of Rajya Sabha MP and its UP state president, Raj Babbar, from Moradabad. Raj Babbar is a seasoned politician and is rarely seen in films these days.
7. Prakash Raj
Actor Prakash Raj will be contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Bengaluru Central as an Independent candidate. He is one of the most voluble and politically aware actors we have today and is a strong critic of the current government.
