Deepika Padukone is one of Bollywood’s highest paid and sought after actresses and has made her mark in the industry. With films including Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat, Ram Leela and Piku under her belt, she has proved her mettle time and time again. Not only is she known for her good looks, but she has also proved herself with her stellar acting skills. She has put India on the global map with her appearance at the MET Gala and Cannes Film Festival and she was also spotted rubbing shoulders with Hollywood star Kendall Jenner recently. The actress, after her Hollywood debut with XXX: Return of Xander Cage hasn’t done much work in Hollywood, but currently has her hands full with a number of Bollywood projects.
Deepika Padukone is also that one celebrity who has been rather open about her experience with depression and has also founded an initiative for mental health and its awareness. While Deepika Padukone has reaped success during her career, you may not know that she has on many occasions rejected a number of films, and that too with Bollywood megastar, Salman Khan. We went on a mission to read up on this and here we put together all the time Deepika Padukone could have teamed up with Salman Khan but chose not to.
1. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015)
Salman Khan and Deepika Padukone were supposed to work together in Sooraj Barjatya's Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, however, the role was then taken up by Sonam Kapoor. The film has been one of Salman Khan’s biggest successes. When Deepika was questioned about this film in particular, she said, “See films always belong to people who do them. It doesn't matter who was offered or who didn't do it. That’s why I talk about films that I have been offered. That's not what matters, what matters eventually after the film has released is who the film belongs to and it belongs to those who have been a part of it." It would have been interesting however, to see Deepika alongside Salman Khan in this film.
2. Jai Ho (2014)
While Salman Khan’s films are usually a hit and head to the Rs100 crore club, the film Jai Ho was a rather underwhelming project. While the film did go on to make more than Rs 100 crores at the box office, it is still considered one of his least appreciated films. The film marked Daisy Shah’s debut, however, it was first offered to Deepika Padukone who had turned it down after reading the script.
3. Bajrangi Bhaijan (2015)
Bajrangi Bhaijan has been hailed as one of the best films of Salman Khan’s career and reaped success at the box office for a long time after its release. As per reports, Bajrangi Bhaijan was offered to Deepika Padukone initially, but then went to Kareena Kapoor after DP declined the role. The film went on to become one of Kareena Kapoor’s biggest hits in recent times and narrates the story of a young mute girl from Pakistan who gets lost in India and can’t find her way home.
4. Sultan (2016)
Deepika Padukone was the top pick for this Salman Khan starrer. Film makers wanted to rope her in for the role of an athlete in Sultan. Since the actress is from a sporting family and her father being a professional tennis player, film makers believed she would be the best to play the role. The A-list actress however, turned down the role and many said that turning down the role was a bad move on her part. The role was then bagged by Anushka Sharma who stepped in to play the athlete.
5. Kick (2014)
Kick was an action-comedy genre film produced and directed by Sajid Nadiadwala. It was the official Hindi remake of the Tamil film which goes by the same name. It was not the actual film that was offered to DP, but in fact, the item song which was then taken up by Nargis Fakhri. Deepika Padukone is said to have turned the role down as she thought it would clash with her song Lovely, in Happy New Year.
This is one Bollywood project that went through a lot of to and fro and lots of changes. From being stalled, to shelved, to being passed on so many times, nobody really knew what was going on with it. Eventually, the names of Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt were considered and after Salman Khan and Deepika rejected the roles, Varun and Alia took the project on.
So while fans are still waiting to see the two on screen together, Deepika Padukone will next be seen in Meghna Gulzar’s Chhappak. The film will narrate the story of real life acid attack survivor, Laxmi Agarwal and the role will be essayed by DP. Deepika Padukone is also going to be starring alongside Ranveer Singh in ’83; for which shooting has commenced in London. The film is all set to narrate the events which took place at the cricket World Cup in 1983, in which legendary cricketer, Kapil Dev led the Indian team to victory. Ranveer Singh is going to play the role of Kapil Dev, while Deepika will play the role of his wife. The film will mark the first time the couple will share screen space since they tied the knot last year.
Salman Khan on the other hand, has been serving us all with some major fitness goals as of late as he gears up for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Inshallah. This will mark the first time after almost a decade that Salman Khan will be coming together with the ace filmmaker. The film, which will also star Alia Bhatt in a leading role, will also mark the first time Alia Bhatt will be working with the filmmaker. Inshallah is one of the most awaited movies for 2020.
