6 Signs That You’re Drinking Too Much Coffee
Coffee may be your go-to drink every morning and afternoon, but chances are that it may be doing more harm than good. Here are some signs that you’re drinking too much coffee
After getting out of bed, the first thing you may want to do is head to the kitchen and brew a cup of coffee or head to your favourite café and buy your favourite cup of coffee. Coffee, for many, is the reason they are able to feel awake in the mornings and for some it has become essential to function. If this sounds like you, then you may be a coffee addict. While drinking coffee can have many benefits, drinking copious amounts of it can have a negative impact on your health.
If you find yourself needing a second cup of coffee in the morning, followed by a third in the middle of the day, then you could be doing more harm than good to your body. While research suggests there are many positives that can come from drinking coffee, beware of the negatives that are attached to caffeine. Here are some signs that you may be drinking too much of the beverage.
1. You Feel Anxious
If you already suffer from anxiety, reaching for that cup of coffee can add fire to the fuel and increase your levels of anxiety. Drinking coffee if you’re already an anxious person can rob you of proper sleep or trigger your flight or fight response. In a 1990 study published in Psychosomatic Medicine, 25 men were given a moderate dose of caffeine or a placebo before a stressful task. The men, who were all regular coffee drinkers, had higher blood pressure, stress hormones, and about double the reported stress level with the caffeine compared with the placebo. Do yourself a favour and stay away when you’re already feeling anxious.
2. Your Heart Races
When you can feel your heart racing, it can be an unsettling feeling. It may feel like your heart is beating at an unreasonable pace and trying to escape through your rib cage. These heart palpitations can be caused by the consumption of too much coffee and caffeine, nicotine, and even alcohol. In some cases, a racing heart can lead to dizziness and even fainting spells. According to a 2017 study in the journal Frontiers in Psychiatry, 94 per cent of doctors recommend patients experiencing the fluttering heart beats stop consuming caffeine.
3. You Can’t Sleep
One of the first signs that you’re drinking too much coffee is insomnia. If you’re tossing and turning in bed and find it hard to get to sleep then there’s definitely too much caffeine in your system. The delicious beverage may be wreaking havoc with your sleep cycle. It can take several hours for coffee to leave your system and that is why we are told not to consume caffeinated beverages in the second half of the day. With caffeine remaining in your body, it can increase the number of times you wake up during the night, and decrease overall time that you are asleep. To solve this problem, try to drink that last cup of coffee no later than noon.
4. You’re Jittery
While coffee is great to make you feel alert and give you that instant boost, too much of it can actually turn into a negative thing. Caffeine speeds up your central nervous system and can cause you to feel jumpy. Skip your fourth cup and we assure you it will reduce the jitters.
With that being said, you can now probably ascertain whether you are drinking too many cups of coffee a day and where you should be drawing the line.
