Bollywood has songs for every day and every occasion. Ranging from songs singing the alphabet (watch Hum Saath Saath Hain) to songs counting numbers (watch Tezaab), Bollywood's got it for you. While most iconic songs are based around romance and relationships and breakups, there are many songs which are based on friendship and camaraderie. Subhash K Jha picks his top ten songs on friendship from Bollywood and fair warning, most of them include Big B.
1. Yeh dosti hum nahin todenge:
Is there a better filmy anthem for friendship than this Sholay chartbuster sung by Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey? Tera gham mera gham ...aisa apna pyar.... khaana-peena saath hai marna jeena saath hai...R.D Burman had earlier brought together the invincible jodi of Kishore and Manna-da in Padosan for a dushmani song Ek chatur naar which had the two singers confronting one another in a pitched battle to the finish. For Sholay’s iconic friendship song the Big B got Manna Dey’s voice as he has always been a fan of Manna Dey ever since the legendary singer sang theBig B’s father Harivansh Rai Bahchchan’s Madhushala. In fact the Big B made everyone in the cast and crew of his serial Yudh observe a 2-minute silence when Manna Dey passed away. This was the only song where Mannada playbacked for the Big B.
2. Tere jaisa yaar kahan:
...Kahaan aisa yaraana! Another iconic dosti song filmed on the Big B and Amjad Khan in the film Yaraana. The fact that the two of them were close friends in real life really helped make this Rajesh Roshan compositoom come alive. Curiously Kishore Kumar crooned for both Big B and Amjad Khan.
3. Diye jalte hain phool khilte hain badi mushqil se magar duniya mein dost milte hain:
Yet another iconic song filmed on Amitabh Bachchan, though he didn’t get to sing a line of the song. The entire song was lip-synced by Rajesh Khanna in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Namak Haraam. He sang of a friendship that existed strictly for the screen.
4. Bane chahe dushman zamana hamara salaamat rahe dostana hamara:
Kishore Kumar and Mohd Rafi in one of their last collaborative songs in Raj Khosla’s Dostana.Rafi passed away soon after the recording of this song. Ironically the two actors who lip-synced for the two great singers couldn’t see eye to eye. And Rafi Saab and Kishoreda were barely cordial to one another and yet able to imbue so much warmth and camaraderie in this Laxmikant-Pyarelal composition.
5. Yaari hai Imaan mera yaar meri zindagi:
Yet one more ode to friendship filmed on the Big B, though again he was not singing the song.Pran Saab was. In Zanjeer the Big B’s stern no-nonsense character allowed no musical expression of love(to Jaya Bhaduri) or friendship(to Pran).
6. Meri Dosti Mera Pyar:
Koi jab raah na paaye mere sung aaye ke pag-pag deep jalaye meri dosti mera pyar. Filmed on the then-unknown Sudhir Kumar the song written by Majrooh Sultanpuri become an anthem for friendship that lingers in the jukebox of the mind to this day.
7. Saat ajoobe iss duniya mein aathwi apni jodi:
You could say that again! Dharmendra in a skirt and Jeetendra in tights singing this friendship song...who but Manmohan Desai could have conceived and executed such an unabashedly homo-erotic friendship song? I am sure the very pristine and innocent Mohd Rafi and Mukesh didn’t think much of lines line Tode se bhi toote na yeh dharam-veer ki jodi....Koi tujhko de awaaz toh main bolun...
8. Imli ka boota beri ka ped:
A nursery-rhyme like friendship song in Subhash Ghai’s Saudagar filmed on the two veteran actors Raj Kumar and Dilip Kumar...the number has a certain childlike innocence and unspoilt charm about it. This is dosti that goes back to the langoti days.
9. Ek rasta do rahi ek chor ek sipahi:
When Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra reprised their buddy buddy baatein from Sholay in Ram Balram the result was this zingy friendship song sung by Mohd Rafi and Kishore Kumar. In many ways the duo shared a far better camaraderie in this song. But picture chali nahin, mere dost.
10. Doston mein koi baat chal jaati dosti dushmani mein badal jaati hai:
A rare song that ‘dares’ to explore the dark side of male bonding. When a deep friendship is torn apart what happens to the buddy-buddy feelings? Shashi Kapoor oozes cynicism as he hurls barbed accusations at Rajesh Khanna in this song from Raj Khosla’s Prem Kahani. Raj Kapoor had done the same squirmy stab-in-the-back dosti song with Rajendra Kumar in Sangam. Dost dost na raha.....toh kya raha?
What are your favorite songs from Bollywood that include friendship? Or is the age of bromance over and has been replaced by practical relationships? One can look at Do Mastaane Chalay from Andaz Apna Apna, or more recently Farhan Akhtar's Dil Chahta Hai or Zoya Akhtar's Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara which feature friends. Even Sonam Kapoor's Veere Di Wedding can be a good addition on friendship songs in the modern day. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
