It is one of Sanjay Dutt’s most loved films. ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ released in 2003 and its second part, ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ are considered cult films that won both critical and commercial acclaim. These were the films that resurrected Sanjay Dutt’s career and established Rajkumar Hirani as a director par excellence. Earlier there were rumours that the Dutt-Hirani combo was working on the third part titled ‘Munnabhai Chale America’. A small teaser had also been released for the same featuring Sanjay and his lovable sidekick ‘Circuit’ played by Arshad Warsi. Unfortunately, the script couldn’t be locked in, Sanjay went to jail for his involvement in the Mumbai blasts case and Hirani went on to make ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘PK’.
But now comes good news for fans of the franchise. Rajkumar Hirani has unwittingly revealed that he is indeed making a sequel to Lage Raho Munnabhai. However, it won’t be Munnabhai Chale America as suggested before. Talking to Outlook, Hirani said we may see Sanjay Dutt again as the bhai and Arshad Warsi as his trusted sidekick. When asked if the franchise will return, the filmmaker said, “We wanted to do the third Munna Bhai film and even wrote a lot of it, but we were not able to match the script with the first two. Now, I have found something, though we still have to write it,” Hirani said.
Even in an earlier interview with critic Rajeev Masand, both Hirani and his writer Abhijaat Joshi confirmed that they were going to come up with a sequel to Munnabhai. That’s great news for fans!
