Have you ever taken the time to appreciate a romantic Ghazal? Bonded with your child over some soulful music? It’s this rich musical heritage of Indian performing arts that Jogiraj Sikidar set out to share when he opened the Malhaar Centre for Performing Arts. A training hub for Indian performing arts, Malhaar started off as one of the first Indian classical musical ensembles in the UAE. Known for their experimental approach, Malhaar’s popular productions such as Rooh-e-Ishq (2010) and Jashn-e-Awadh (2011) were sold out shows and received critical acclaim. With a massive pool of talent at hand, Founder and Director Jogiraj Sikidar expanded Malhaar into a training platform, which offers innovative courses in the performing arts year-round.
The idea, says Jogiraj Sikidar, is to not only provide training but to groom students to become complete performing artists. This is done through the age-old ‘Guru-Shishya Parampara’ where students learn Indian music directly from mentors and performing art practitioners. Malhaar’s instructors go beyond singers and instrumentalists to include composers, writers, stage designers, visual artists and actors. Students also get the opportunity to interact with maestros; the centre welcomed living legend Pandit Jasraj and iconic singer Shubha Mudgal within the first three months of its opening.
If vocal and instrumental music, classical dance and theatre don’t catch your fancy, take a look at Malhaar’s more offbeat offerings. Tone your body while dancing to filmy tunes with Bollywood Fitness Classes, or get creative during jamming sessions at White Unplugged. Malhaar offers courses even for the little ones, living by the motto “catch ‘em young!”
