Veteran Actor and Writer Tom Alter Passes Away At Age 67; Bollywood Pays Their Respects

Veteran film, television and theatre actor Tom Alter passed away on Friday night. Alter had been battling stage four skin cancer before passing away at the age of 67.

The actor and former sports journalist passed away on the night of 29th September in Mumbai. A statement released on Pinkvilla on behalf of his family read, “It is with sadness we announce the death of Tom Alter, actor, writer, director, Padma Shri, and our dear husband and father. Tom passed away Friday night at home with his family and close family members in attendance. We ask for their privacy to be respected at this time."

Alter was best known as an accomplished actor, having acted in numerous films and television shows, but also ventured into sports journalism during the 80s and 90s. He was the first person to interview Sachin Tendulkar when the cricketer had not yet debuted for India. He also penned three books, and was ultimately awarded the Padma Shri award in 2008 by the Indian Government for his contribution to the field of arts and cinema.

Bollywood came out to give their condolences on the passing of the film personality. Celebrities such as Anil Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Javed Jafferi and Huma Qureshi tweeted their condolences and paid their respects to Alter.
