Trailer Review: Ishaan Khattar's Beyond The Clouds

Prior to his big Bollywood debut, Dhadak, with Janhvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter will be seen in Majid Majidi’s Beyond The Clouds, marking his first step into international cinema. Coming from the acclaimed Iranian director, who has previously delivered outstanding films like Children of Heaven and The Song of Sparrows, Beyond The Clouds looks to be a promising film, and one that sticks true to the filmmakers craft of weaving magic on screen.

The trailer just released today, and in a short span of time, it has already managed to garner nearly 20,000 views. One glance at the trailer and a series of thoughts race through our minds. One being intense performances, by both Ishaan and Malavika Mohanan, and another being the story that highlights the rather intriguing underbelly of Mumbai. The film revolves around two siblings, living in the Dhobi Ghat and going about their lives, when suddenly tragedy strikes. Then follows a wrongful arrest, leading to the struggle to break free, which seems to be the main crux of the film. After we watched the 2:15 minute trailer, our hearts were forced to feel the emotions of the relationship between Ishaan and Malavika’s character, but in the bargain the story seemed to miss our attention. One second watch, it’s easier to understand the plot that revolves around the want to make quick money, and a boy who gets himself involved with a dangerous drug cartel to earn quick bucks.

AR Rahman’s background score and Majidi’s cinematic brilliance shine throughout the trailer transporting us right into those dingy lanes. However, we can’t resist to draw comparison between the feel of Beyond the Clouds and Slumdog Millionaire. Will they be similar or will Majid Majidi create his unique magic yet again, we’ll only have to wait to watch.

In the meanwhile, watch the trailer and tell us what you think:
