Padmavati Trailer Review: It’s Bajirao Mastani But Bigger And More Gorgeous

What do you think when you utter the words Sanjay Leela Bhansali? Grand sets, gorgeous costumes, stunning frames, beautiful men and women and jaw-dropping scale. Well, all these elements and more are evident in the Padmavati trailer. The Deepika Padukone-Ranveer Singh-Shahid Kapoor starrer is easily the most awaited film of the year and the controversies that it has found itself in (thanks to right wing groups who vandalised the sets, attacked the director and sent out threats) has only whetted the curiosity further.

If the posters were real teasers, the trailer will make you impatient for more! Save for one fact – there is a distinct been there, seen that feel to it. The courts, the costumes, the music and even the way Deepika elegantly walks around the palace is reminiscent of SLB’s 2015 blockbuster Bajirao Mastani. In fact, one almost expected the Peshwa to pop up in the scheme of things and he wouldn’t have seemed out of place! Even the sets and the headgear and the battle scenes appear to have come straight from the Bajirao… edit table. But with a difference.

Padmavati is grander and more eloquent. It’s evident that SLB has given this best and he wants to take the viewers on a splendid visual journey. This one will be a treat to watch on the big screen!
The actors seem cut out for the job and why not, considering both Deepika and Ranveer Singh have worked with Bhansali in the past. Shahid, the new entrant in this coterie, looks regal and seriously handsome. Deepika is in Mastani mode but with a Padmavati lehenga. But she looks every inch the proud Rajput queen.

And speaking of Rajput, there is enough about Rajput valour in the trailer to keep the Karni Senas of the world happy.  So what was missing? Yes, the one and only Alaudin Khilji aka Ranveer Singh.
Ranveer, whose menacing look in the poster, is enough to send shivers down the spine, is there for only a bit in the trailer but the screen lights up when he’s around. We guess the makers want to keep the intrigue about him alive which is why there is so less of Ranveer in the clip. More the reason to watch Padmavati!

The trailer for the period drama was released at 13:03 today (October 9, 2017). Why the odd timing? According to Times of India, it carries historical significance because it was in 1303 that Alauddin Khilji decided to lay siege to the Chittor Fort, led by his desire to capture the legendary Hindu Rajput queen, Rani Padmini. The detailing is impeccable.

Book your tickets for December 1, 2017.
