Suchitra Krishnamoorthi's Complain About Azaan, Sparks Controversy

Four controversial tweets by the singer-actress, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, have invited the wrath of trolls, bringing back to mind, some of the other instances, when public comments on religion created a storm. Two days ago, (22 July), twitter broke into a frenzy when, Suchitra posted a rather questionable tweet to her account in the wee hours of the morning.

As would be expected, her tweet gathered a lot of attention online, with some speaking in support and some trashing the actress for her ‘insensitivity’. She went on to be relentlessly trolled by the Twitterati with comments pouring in from left, right and centre. Indian politician, Juhi Singh, trashed her tweet saying, “Such irresponsible comments have been made in the past also. I am unable to understand what kind of people they are. I would like to know how does azaan, which otherwise purifies you on hearing, bother her. May be her sleep is more important.”

Suchitra didn’t stop here, she went on to rant with posts, explain her viewpoints.

This is not the first time the singer has voiced her opinion toward religion. Back in 2009, she had blogged about how she was disturbed from her slumber, because of the sound of prayers. She wrote, “Noise is noise-whether it comes from prayer or party music bellowing out of loudspeakers. Wether it is the sound of hindu bhajans, christian hymns or muslim azaan, at 5 am the world is entitled to silence. There should be a time limit imposed on it that applies to all communities and sects. Religion is a private matter and should not spill on to the streets-if it does it should do so at civil hours say 8 am to 10 pm or something.”

Why her Tweet is creating a Twitter tornado

Not so long ago, in April (2017), superstar singer Sonu Nigam was trashed for his tweet on the use of loudspeakers for azaan. The controversy had almost become a national debate, with every other person contributing their views toward the fiasco. It didn’t end there!

He was mercilessly trolled, but he refused to delete his comment, which in turn took an ugly turn. A religious leader issued a fatwa against the singer, where Sonu eventually ended up having to shave his head. Following that, the singer quit Twitter. Read all the fiasco here!

Keeping the Sonu Nigam incident in mind, we wonder how ugly this one will turn out!
