Newton, Rajkummar Rao’s film has been widely appreciated by filmmakers, critics and fans, with everyone praising the actors performance. The film went on to become India’s first official entry into the Oscars, but seems like it has hit a roadblock.
Soon as the film started gathering attention, the industry was buzzing with news of it being a rip-off of Iranian film, Raye Makhfi aka Secret Ballot. Once the claims gained momentum, filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap rose to the occasion, defending the Rajkummar Rao starrer, tweeting in support of the film. He said, “Newton is an award winner from Berlin Fest and I can promise you those curators watch more films in a year than rest of us do in a lifetime.”
According to reports on BollywoodLife, to prove facts right, Anurag got in touch with the producer of the Iranian film Secret Ballot, to find out whether he thought the film was copied. This is what happened, “With over enthusiastic media and our cinephiles with over active imagination...who called “Newton” a copy of “Secret Ballot” ..here is what the producer of “Secret Ballot” said to me after watching Newton. I requested the link of Newton from its director and send it to Marco Muller, the producer. And he wrote back “A pretty decent film, definitely no rip off from our Secret Ballot (even if the general concept is the same)” and then I asked him if I can share his response on Social Media? He replied, “please feel free as you see fit, there is not even a hint of plagiarism”.. below is the screen shot,” said Anurag.
Now that the producer himself has spoken, we hope all the speculation about the film being a copy is put to rest.
