It was the biggest night on Dubai’s social map and that’s exactly how it turned out to be. On a chilly night on December 13, Masala Awards and the glamorously swish crowd attending it – including the biggest and brightest of Bollywood and Lollywood stars – sent the temperatures soaring even further.
As the awards celebrated its tenth anniversary amidst glitter at Bollywood Parks Dubai (an apt place for all-things Bollywood) some of our favourite celebs took away not merely the golden trophies but also entertainment, fun and loads of memories. The show began with an unusual host. Our very own Boman Irani, who infused the evening with his brilliant comic turn that he is so famous for. Munnabhai, anyone? He kept the 800-strong audiences in splits throughout. But the utter surprise of the evening was his rendition of Frank Sinatra’s My Way. To the list of actor, host and photographer, now, it seems, we must add ‘singer’ to Boman’s short but incredibly versatile profile.
TV star Ankita Lokhande performed on a medley of songs, including a Sridevi number in the very presence of the legend. Wonder if Sridevi, who was accompanied by husband Boney Kapoor and daughter Khushi to the event, approved. We are sure she did!
With so many singers in the house, it was also a night of musical reverie. New kid on the bloc, Mustafa Khan created a stir with his Bollywood mashup while Bilal Saeed mesmerized listeners with his popular tracks. Among the winners were Mahira Khan who bagged the Asian Woman of Substance trophy. She looked ravishing in a red gown. She was also seen backstage, bonding with Manish Malhotra and Sridevi. Who knows what’s cooking! Maybe, a Bollywood Indo-Pak joint venture!
Prerna Arora, the woman behind some of Bollywood’s edgiest films (Toilet – Ek Prem Katha and upcoming Fanney Khan), was acknowledged for her work through the ‘Dynamic Producer of the Year’ trophy. Meanwhile, the dashing Arjun Rampal collected his ‘Contribution to Cinema’ award amid rousing applause and was prodded on by good friend Boman. In the end, two stars stood out. Govinda, who bagged the Dancing Legend of Bollywood trophy, brought the house down literally with the medley of his hit numbers. Chi Chi can still dance and how! As he walked off the stage, there was loud cheering for an encore. Later on, Govinda did saunter back into the stage to regale people with his crackling sense of humour. Finally, there was Sridevi. The Mom star received a standing ovation for her phenomenal journey in Bollywood. The star-studded event was also attended by Dubai’s crème de la crème.
