When it rains, it rattles pours, whistles and floods in the UAE but no one thought snow was a possibility in the arid quarters of the Middle East. Imagine our surprise when we woke up to find 104.8 Channel 4 Radio station's Facebook page with pictures of what appeared to be snow in Abu Dhabi. Has this ever happened before? There were reports of snow in Al Jees mountain receiving 20 centimetres of snow in 2009 but no, never on flat ground. It seems the pictures are deceptive as what looks to be snow is actually a large and intense amount of hail with the highway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai being especially impacted with hail this morning.
The weather has been tumultuous in the north of the UAE as well with with floods in Ras Al Khaimah. Residents woke to flooded streets and submerged cars and there have been warnings from the police to not frequent mountainous areas for fear of flooded streets. A word of caution to all commuters today - drive safe, slow and easy - life is literally a slippery slope in the UAE today.
