Besides having a production company of her own, Anushka also recently ventured out into opening her stylish clothing label, NUSH. The new brand received a lot of praise from fans and friends from the industry- but that was only until right now.
Fast forward to a week after the launch, Anushka Sharma found herself to be right in the middle of a plagiarism row. The actress was accused of copying designs off a Chinese manufacturer, reproducing them under her own label. These reports emerged soon after promos of the launch were shared on social media, where Anushka can be seen talking about how she spent hours on end sampling the designs for the collection. She also mentioned that the clothes are in tune with her own fashion style, and that she actively provided inputs in terms of what would and what would not work. Oops!
Ever since the similarities to the Chinese label were spotted, Anushka came forward with a clarification, saying she was unaware and would look into it- pulling down the copied designs. Further to the actress addressing the situation, the garment manufactures, Suditi Industries, have also issued a statement explaining the mishap. Mr. Pawan Agarwal, CMD Suditi Industries clarified "We have just got to know about the discrepancies in some designs of our brand NUSH and we are taking strict action about the same. Our process at Suditi industries was that the entire responsibility of designing and procuring samples was at our end and we have recently realised that some of our procured designs from the Chinese manufacturer were being available elsewhere too. This not only is a serious design and procurement process lapse from our design and procurement team but also a breach of trust by the manufacturing company in china with us. We are taking serious actions, internally and externally, against this breach of faith.”
Clarifying Anushka’s contribution to the designing he said, "Our business partner Ms. Anushka Sharma was never part of our designing and procuring process. She was only involved in advising us on the styles that could go on the floor based on her personal style and sensibility for which she had dedicated a lot of her time and effort. We pride ourselves in partnering with someone known for her credibility, honesty and values she brings to the table as part of her imagery and more. We are committed to bringing the best of designs, at the best prices to the Indian consumers."
While there have been several plagiarism related controversies in the industry, this one- related to a clothing brand is the first. We hope Anushka’s team is able to get to the bottom of this, allowing her to carry on with her new business venture.
