We look back at the best movies down the years

by Emily McCarrick
Akshay Kumar staked a legitimate claim as the real king of Bollywood this week. His action comedy, Singh is Kinng is on course to shatter box office records as the most succesful opening weekend for a single film. With around $15m in reciepts it will do Akshay's emerging reputation as a bankable star no harm at all.

Bollywood insiders, however, have not even placed the film in their top 10 movies of all time.

Here we pick out a list of ten of the best Bollywood films of all time. Hardcore fans might disagree with our list. If you do, send in your suggestions. But if you're new to Indian cinema, and want a good benchmark of ten great films to begin your lifelong Bollywood affair this is our beginner's guide to Bollywood classics.

MOTHER INDIA 1957

Much-loved as one of Bollywood’s most pro-female films, this epic saga of the sufferings of an Indian peasant woman has an inherent and perennial appeal, so successful it’s often described as the Indian equivalent of Gone with the Wind.

MOTHER INDIA 1957

Much-loved as one of Bollywood’s most pro-female films, this epic saga of the sufferings of an Indian peasant woman has an inherent and perennial appeal, so successful it’s often described as the Indian equivalent of Gone with the Wind.PYAASA 1957

Vijay is an unsuccessful poet whose works are not taken seriously by publishers or his unsupportive brothers. Unable to bear their taunting he stays away from home, often out on the streets, where he encounters a prostitute, Gulabo, who, enamoured of his poetry, falls in love with him. He also stumbles across his ex-girlfriend Meena from college and finds out that she is married to a big publisher Mr. Ghosh for financial security who then hires him as a servant to find out more about him and Meena. Throw a dead beggar and a trip to a mental asylum into the mix and you’ve got one of Bollywood’s most popular, if confusing, classics.DO AANKHEN BARAH HAATH 1957

A stark black-and-white film about a jail guard who believes that love and trust can turn even the most hardened criminals into God-fearing responsible citizens. V Shantaram plays the idealistic jailer while his real life wife Sandhya plays his love interest. After much too-ing and fro-ing the prisoners in his care realise what Shantaram is trying to do for them and predictably see the error of their ways.MUGHAL-E-AZAM 1960

It wasn’t much fun being a peasant in ye olde India, by all accounts. Mughal-e-Azam is the love story between a commoner Anarkali and Prince Salim the heir apparent. When his father Emperor Akbar finds out, he is furious and does his best to thwart the romance. Salim however is adamant and rebelliously leads an army against his father. He is defeated in battle and brought before Akbar who sentences him to death by being entombed alive in a brick wall. Nice.GUIDE 1965

A true classic, based on R.K. Narayan's novel ‘The Guide’, starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman. The film was pretty bold for its time as it showed a single man and a married woman in love and even living together. Waheeda plays Rosie, a dancer who is forced to get married to a middle aged man. Once married, she meets her true love, Raju who is a guide by profession. The two fall in love and Raju gives Rosie the life that she always craved. But she’s still married. As with all moral tales, the relationship turns sour, as Raju is revealed as a bit of a rascal and ends up behind bars.SHOLAY 1975

Known as Bollywood’s foremost ‘curry’ western Sholay was 'patterned' on American spaghetti westerns, though as with any other good Hindi film, the presumed 'copy' is at least as interesting as the 'original'. The film narrates the story of an ex-cop Thakur Baldev Singh who hires two jail birds to eradicate a town and neighbouring villages of the menace of Gabbar Singh and his band of dreaded bandits. The story is told in two flashbacks and the climax shows the final farcical encounter between Thakur and Gabbar Singh, where Thakur, whose arms have been cut off, kicks the bandit into submission.MAINE PYAAR KIYA 1989

This film had all the ingredients to click with the Indian audience. There’s an obedient boy, a docile and domesticated girl, and some funny and free-spirited souls who like to spontaneously break into song. Much like the Hollywood classics of the 80s, there’s also a generous helping of cheese, making this one of the genre’s top-sellers.
