He is a flamboyant dresser. At the red carpet opening of the Dubai Fashion Fiesta Rohit K Verma wore a kurta with a colourful Madhubani painting all over the front. So we expected a funky, over the top collection from him, especially after he told us that it was called ‘Emotion drops on the red carpet' and is designed to cheer up the woman who waited expectantly to win a Filmfare award or an Oscar but lost out.
But the designer surprised us with an elegant and very wearable collection on the final day of DFF.
Rohit recently closed down his earlier label and along with business partner Sanjeet Anand, he has launched a new label called SARV Atelier. "This is our debut show and I wanted to do it in Dubai because this city is lucky for me," he said.
His show opened with a line of anarkali suits in vibrant monochromes. The ankle length tunics in flowing chiffon and georgette had draped tops and lace, pin tuck, smocking, ruching, coloured crystal and appliqué flower accents. This was followed by a more bling line of anarkalis with layers of contrasting colours, brocade tops, sexy slits in the front and beaded tassels. The designer also presented a range of glamorous gowns in two-tone silk and ended the show with a delicately embroidered off the shoulder cream bridal gown. He took his bow in a long, flowing spandex bandhgala kaftan trimmed with coloured gemstones.
To order the garments go to www.sarvatelier.com or contact Rohit on sarvatelier@yahoo.com. The label will soon be seen on several television serials and reality shows and the designer himself is set to make a cameo appearance in a movie. We are guessing Madhur Bhandakar's Fashion.
Mystic Mantra was another label which showed on the closing night of the Fashion Fiesta.
"This is my first international show and I was very excited to be going to such an oriental place. I wanted to BE Dubai and to capture the spirit of this city in my collection," said Priyanka Thakur.
So what did she do? She sent her models down the ramp wearing fur caps, Morroccan Fez's and an assortment of embroidered caps - as accessories to her bling saris. The designer from Mumbai also included some jellabiyas and harem pants teamed with a tiny choli top in her collection.
Priyanka launched her label Mystic Mantra two years ago and has recently been joined by partner Ruchi, a trend spotter, fashion writer and researcher and director of Lifestyle, luxury and fashion with the FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce). The label specialises in fusion wear and caters to actors such as Smriti Irani, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Mandira Bedi.
The line they created specially for their show on the final day of the Dubai Fashion Fiesta is called ‘Digi bling'. It included a range of glittering, highly embellished saris and lehengas and jellabiyas, evening dresses and gowns in digital prints accented with embroidery, pearls and crystals.
True to its name the collection was very bling with plenty of gold and silver. We liked the innovative sari borders, the exuberant mix of colours and especially the multicoloured brocade trim on a petticoat. But some of the digital prints looked too much like the ones we saw in Shane and Falguni Peacock's collection on Saturday.
It seemed that in their attempt to impress in their debut show the designers tried too hard.
