Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (Movie Review)
You'll leave the cinema happy to have hung out with the young cast
For a while now in Bollywood cinema, the growth of the multiplex concept has resulted in the arrival of genre films. Hence, we now have sci-fi, thrillers, suspense, children's cinema, teen-comedies, love stories etc - and not all rolled into one.
Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na is a genre film. A simple, sweet, teen-comedy that marks the debut of Aamir Khan's nephew Imran Khan. Unlike his uncle's debut in the classic QSQT, which had women across India writing love notes to Aamir in their blood, Imran's beginning will probably not generate THAT sort of frenzy.
However, comparisons are unfair and while Imran Khan lacks the star presence of his uncle or the likes of Hrithik Roshan, he does well in a film that will be remembered and appreciated for its freshness, earnestness and honesty.
Imran in numerous interviews has stated that Jaane Tu was not his film, but a group film. And the young man is absolutely right in crediting his co-actors. It is a group film about a group of college kids and the typical group dynamics that goes with that strange territory of high-school or college.
Jai Singh Rathore (Imran Khan), Aditi (Genelia), Jignesh Patel (Nirav Mehta), Sandhya (Aliskha Varde), Shaleen (Sughanda) and Rotlu (Karan) are part of the college gang in focus.
Jai and Aditi are best friends within the group. Rotlu likes Aditi. Sandhya likes Jai. But, Jai and Aditi like each other - in that platonic sort of way. Given the tagline of the film asks us when do we know it's love, the plot is a real no-brainer. In a nutshell, it traces the journey of Jai and Aditi discovering that they're actually in love.
The end is no surprise, but in this case it's the means to arriving at the end that makes Jaane Tu such a refreshing watch. The characters are real, believable and endearing. And what a relief that they actually look their age!
Abbas Tyrewala's directorial debut and the high-production values make the film easy on the eye and immensely watchable. Smart lines delivered with remarkable effortlessness by all the actors result in a real-like film that has focused on the more important elements such as casting, dialogues and details allowing us to overlook even crucial factors such as script and narration.
There's no point in over-analysing a film like Jaane Tu as it demonstrates no wannabe aspirations of cinematic greatness. It's honest in its appeal as it clearly wants to entertain and leave the viewer with a bit of nostalgia and a healthy feeling of light-heartedness that accompanies college films.
Imran Khan's debut is an honorable one, but far from a spectacular one. He will fit right into the shoes of younger characters that his uncle Aamir may have to pass, but as for his depth as an actor, he's probably still a few yards away from the deep end.
While Jaane Tu is Imran's debut vehicle, it is really Genelia who steals the show. The actress is a real livewire on screen and conveys those annoying feelings of jealousy, confusion, irritability and fake happiness without any problem.
Within the gang, who sport very Bombay nicknames such as Rats (Jai), Meow (Aditi), Bombs (Sandhya), Jiggy (Jignesh), the guys fare much better than the girls. Jiggy delights as the Gujju while Rotlu and Bombs together are smashing as the couple who discover each other as soul mates when left solo by their crushes, Jai and Aditi.
Supporting cast members like Ratna Pathak Shah as Jai's mum, Paresh Rawal as the police inspector, Naseeruddin Shah, as Jai's dead Rajput father who speaks from his portrait hold, fort magnificently.
Even the sub-plot of Jai's rite of passage as a true male Rathore from Ranjhore family by fulfilling three conditions - beating up a person, spending time in jail and riding a horse - is largely saved and made palatable by way of the safe casting of the Shahs and Arbaaz and Sohail Khan, who appear as Rathore boys in the guise of dancing cowboys.
A. R. Rahman's music is used suitably bearing the tone and theme of the film. Although his Tu Bole Main Boloon sounded eerily reminiscent of the "You Say Tomato, I Say Tomatoe" song one hummed as a child.
Sure, there are a few loose ends. Like what does Ratna Pathak Shah do other than read books, fight with policemen and talk to her dead husband? Or how does Jai get away without being shot after breaking through airport controls? But, it's all minor within the big picture.
Jaane Tu gets every aspect of human relationships right. Brother-sister through Aditi and her brother Amit, platonic friends through Aditi and Jai and parent-child through all the characters.
Perhaps the narrative could have been a little shorter and a few chapters from the gang's life could have been cut out, but chances are, you'll leave the cinema happy to have hung out with Genelia's gang, than not.

Heart touchin dialogues like when Aditi's friend ask her "Jaana Zaruri hai Kya?" and she replies "Rukne ki koi wajah bhi toh nahi hai". Aditi's brother Amit tells her "Mein tumse dur nahi chala gaya.. Naye Log Tumhare aur karib aa gaye hai" Amazing and hats off the dialogue writer.

This is the one of the worst movie I ever seen. I can't imagine that this is from Aamir's production. Movie is boring and dragged and stretched to 3hrs. It has two good numbers ... Kabhi kabhi and Pappu. Those are the plus pionts for movie.

Honestly the movie never impressed me much or maybe I belong to the old skool of Dil Chahta Hai. The chemistry between Maanu & Neeru (Raincoat) is more appealing.

JAANE TU MOVIE REVIEW Jaane tu….. the most awaited movie for me in this month. The first reason is its an AAMIR KHAN production, the perfectionist & second the music, A R RAHMAN. These are the only two reasons why I went to watch the movie. But I am bit disappointed. May be I have in mind that its an AAMIR KHAN production. So the movie is going to be different though with ordinary love story. Might be I was expecting something new & which I can’t think off. But truly speaking the movie is ordinary with ordinary love story with ordinary treatment, with expected climax but with extra-ordinary music. All credit goes to music maestro A R RAHMAN. I think 40% of audience will see movie as it is an AAMIR KHAN production, 40% because of music & 20% because of curiosity about Imran Khan. The movie is targeted for the teenagers or let’s says college buddies. Let’s talk about flaws first The story: the story begins with ordinary & expected start. We have already seen such start in Chalte Chalte staring Shahrukh & Rani. Friend telling the story of love of a couple on airport. Nothing new. It is shown that two good friends which are there together for more than 5 years & don’t know they love each other. All bullshit. Unbelievable. How two persons are together for more than 5 years & don’t know they are in LOVE. I think in this age group we more think about love, Gf, Bf, friends etc. Unbelievable. As the story progresses parents of Aditi thinks that Aditi & Jai are in love. Made for each other. So they called Jai for marriage proposal. Atleast after this incidence anybody will think in that way. But Jai & Aditi never do such thing. Which again I can’t believe. Ok then they finally decides to search partners for each other. The way Jai rescued a girl from the gundas is comic but again far apart from reality. & then that girl becomes gf of Jai. From here the jealousy in Aditi starts revealing. So she also engaged with her Mr. Right & now jai is uncomfortable. Finally they both break up & Jai & Aditi comes to know that they love each other & made for each other & so on…… Finally the climax which is the height of everything. Aditi is going to US & Jai goes to airport on the horse & from all lukachhupi with police manages to reach where Aditi is & then a very happy ending. Why the tight security cant stop a single teenage boy. Ohhh Cinematic liberty…… Sorry……… I think the movie start with an unbelievable story & reach to the unbelievable climax which you can’t digest. Another thing which I cant understand why Abbas has not picturized the other songs in the album. The movie is made targeting the youth. Then why the love duet song Kahin to… is not picturized? There where two places where the song could have fit properly. & that’s what the youth wants. Abbas, Just see Rang De Basanti & how the song Tu bin bataye……. Is beautifully picturized. After all its an romantic youth story. This song from jaane tu… by maestro A R R is the lovely song for the youth revealing lots of love & emotions. This would have been a great song to watch on the Screen but…..Abbas disappointed me. The song Pappu cant dance… is the chartbuster but has no relation with the film, or story. There is no situation for this song but Abbas tried to give this song a situation but it is all waste. Instead if this song would have been picturized in the pub as a dance no. it would have been easy to digest. Arbaz & sohail khan.. there characters are unbelievable & waste, but still they manages to make you laugh. Even Jab we met is an ordinary love story. Though the first few minutes of the story even I can’t believe. What Imtiaz ali has managed to do was the fast pace of the movie with beautiful scenes & comic interaction between kareena & Shaheed. So even if you don’t have great story you can make a good movie which will be worth watching 10 times & never get bored. This is what Imtiaz has managed to do. Abbas has tried this but couldn’t make it 100%. The movie has slow pace & here Abbas fails to engage the viewer in the story. Good points - The very much start of the film where all the names come. I felt like I am watching a portrait. I am impressed with the start - The very beginning of the film the song Kabhi Kabhi Aditi …. has really a comic situation which I couldn’t imagine. Great! - The college group which is shown is cool. All characters are real. The casting is perfect. Acting of all characters is also good. We can relate the characters with us. - Naseeruddin Shah is really cool, comic & whenever on the skin he makes you laugh. Even paresh rawal also makes a mark in the small role. It’s really good to see him out of Priyadarshan’s frame. - The Character Amit, Aditi’ brother is fantastic. He has shown lots of sincerity, hardworking in the acting. This character & the relation between Aditi & Amit is heart touching. Hats off to this youngster. - The end is unbelievable but when the cops catch Jai, the scene becomes comedy which will really make you laugh. - The song Tu hi re… Sung by one of the character in the group, Rotlu is fantastic. I am sure you will like his singing performance. - The MUSIC… the movie has a big stamp of A R RAHMAN on it. He has done his job perfectly & the songs will definitely catch the audience & will remain on the chart for longer time. GREAT WORK!! Hats off to ARR - Finally Imran & Genelia. Imran is a chocolate hero. He definitely fits in the character. His performance is cool & real. You will not see Amir in him. That can be called his fault or his achievement. He is different. But performs flawless on the screen. Genelia the sweet bubbly girl. She also performs perfectly with Imran. Specifically the jealousy scene, the uncomfort, she shows with great ease. Good job. Finally, all the responsibility is on the captain, Abbas. We can’t ignore the mistake just because it’s his debut film. But his plus points are: ARRAHMAN, AAMIR KHAN production. The lyrics he wrote are just wonderful. Abbas, if you remain as a lyricist, I will be more happy. The emotion he delivers on ARR music is brilliant with all freshness. All songs are my favorite. Good job as a lyricist. Finally this is the movie which will attract the youth. At this age there is hardly anytime you apply logic. Hence all the youngsters, college crowd will like the movie. If Abbas has made the movie only for them then it’s great. But other audience may not correlate it or like it. AFTER ALL: This is the movie if you watch you will enjoy it if you keep your logic at home. If you miss it you miss nothing. So if you have time & money, Go watch.
