Music of Kismat Konnection
An out-and-out party album
As kismat would have it, it appears that by the time Aziz Mirza readied himself for his comeback, post a 5-year hiatus, his regular music directors of choice (Jatin-Lalit), who had scored all his previous 5 films, had split. For his comeback vehicle, Mirza cast the saddle on to 2008's prize-winning thoroughbred (Pritam). So it's no surprise that KK doesn't have the relatively serene sound or feel of any of Aziz Mirza's prior soundtracks. And, in true Pritam-style, this one's an out-and-out party album.
Neeraj Sridhar's "Aai Pappi", the contagiously-catchy opening track, is enough reason to party. With all the right hooks in all the right places, supported by a crisp and rhythmic arrangement and a very infectious electronic-brass sample, this track can smoothly climb its way towards being this summer's runaway hit.
London-based Punjabi female rapper, Hard Kaur, crosses over into Bollywood, teaming up with Shaan and Akruti Kakkar for "Move Your Body Now". Featuring desi hip/hop bridged with Bollywood undertones, the song also sports lyrics like "freaky freaky raat ho gayi" (Now, don't say that I didn't warn you). The track has a part II, which has vocalist Adeel rather ineffectively replacing Shaan.
"Soniye Ve (Dhak dhak dhak)" is an obnoxiously monotonous bhangra track, which, in Pritam Da's inimitable fashion, bears striking similarity to several songs, and also features a flute roll, characteristic of Rishi Rich/Jay Sean's music. Even Sonu and Sunidhi's vocals aren't able to lift this track out of its mediocrity.
Both the respite-providing mellow songs in the album are pleasant and simple compositions. "Bakhuda Tumhi Ho", featuring Atif Aslam, and "Is This Love (Kahin Na Laage)", featuring Shreya and Mohit Chauhan, are both warm tracks, with which one can zone out and reminisce.
And needless to say, to keep up with the horrifying new Bollywood trend, every one of the above tracks has a "remix" - gladly only one of each. The remix of "Aai Pappi" is probably the best one of them all, though one still wonders why "Bakhuda" needed to be remixed in the first place.
Balance Sheet: "Kismat Konnection" is ‘kuite' a ‘kool' album. With a well-balanced chartbuster like "Aai Pappi" kicking it off, one would expect the rest of the album to be just as catchy and proportionate. I guess you can't have your ‘kake' and eat it too. I'll stop now.
