If one wants to experience home cooked Indian cuisine at reasonable prices, Kamat is the way to go. Don’t go here if you want a fancy night out on the town. However, if casual sweats and a tee is your attire of choice for the evening and you want to grab some homely grub, this is the right place for you. With a large variety of options ranging from street chaat and Mughlai to south Indian delicacies, it offers quite the spread to desi food lovers. The central location of the eatery, in the heart of Bur Dubai, makes it easy to get to as well and the simple décor of the restaurant and the immediately made us nostalgic about India. While deciding on the various appealing options on the menu, my colleague and I sipped on some refreshing fruit mocktails.
Any north Indian meal is incomplete without chaat to begin with. Being huge fans of the spicy desi street food, we decided to try the papdi chaat – a combination of sauces on crispy fried dough topped with yoghurt and traditional spices. Kamat, we must say, prepared the dish quite authentically. However, a dollop more of yoghurt wouldn’t have been amiss. After satisfying our chaat cravings, we ordered a platter of pudina paneer tikka – grilled cottage cheese marinated in mint, yoghurt and tandoori masala and mushrooms stuffed with spinach and cottage cheese. Both the dishes were served with mint chutney that was delicious but slightly watered down. For our main course we ordered dum aloo Kashmiri, a dish comprised of baby potatoes in a pungent tomato gravy, paneer makhanwala, freshly made tandoori rotis
and vegetable Hyderabadi biryani. Every dish, though laden with cooked with generous amounts of oil, was delicious. Don’t count your calories when you’re here as the sky’s the limit! After making our peace with the fact that this meal would add a pound or two to our waistlines, we happily grabbed the dessert menu. Our attendant recommended the chef’s special angoori rabdi – a creamy and divine sweet
option that screams comfort. This was our favourite part of the meal as the chef treated
the rabdi in an entirely original fashion. With tummies full, we waddled out of Kamat with hardly a dent in our wallet. If you’re craving
home cooked food at a bargain, look no further than these comfortable premises, you won’t
be disappointed.
