A treat for Chinese lovers!

Authentic Chinese fare is hard to come by in Dubai probably because a little tweaking and twisting of the cuisine is expected to suit local palates. So it was with pre-set notions that my friend and I stepped into Shanghai Chic, the new Chinese restaurant at the Mövenpick Hotel Ibn Batutta Gate. But by the end of the meal, I was ready to revisit several ideas that I had had about the cuisine. To be fair, the menu wasn’t exactly ‘authentic’. However, it was certainly very different (and pretty exhaustive) as compared to other Chinese restaurants in the city.
The ambience was impressive with deep, dark red and black tones generously interspersed in the décor. The mood was set and we examined the menu. Shanghai Chic prides on its dim sum selection and now we know why. The restaurant has an interesting variety of dim sum and to do full justice to it, I ordered the chef’s pick combination platter which had a spring roll, chicken and shrimp dim sum, duck dim sum and prawns with wasabi. The dumplings were excellent with a smooth exterior and a succulent interior. I immediately made a decision to come for the ‘Bottomless Dim Sum Basket’ offer on Wednesdays where they serve a tasting platter with unlimited dim sum. My friend was equally thrilled with her Peking duck and pancake starter served with plum sauce and spring onion slices. The main course proved to be a bit inconsistent. We were a little disappointed with the roasted sesame chicken and mango salad but the Chilean sea bass fillet served with spicy Schezwan sauce
was excellent.
A tasting platter of chilli chicken, black pepper beef and aubergine and mint chicken arrived next. I found the pepper in the beef a bit too strong but the rest were very good, especially the
chilli chicken.
A dessert of mango pudding with coconut espuma and fried ice-cream later, we were ready to burst. It was probably the most elaborate Chinese meal I had had in a long time. But the sheer variety in the menu makes me want to go
back again.
