Reetika Rajpal on taking her brand Prive Fine Jewellery to great heights
S hy, self-effacing yet exuding a quiet confidence, Reetika Rajpal makes quite an impression when you meet her. She is a woman of few words but talk to her about her favourite topic, jewellery and art, and Reetika can go on and on. A graduate from the prestigious Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design from London, Reetika has dabbled in painting, advertising and teaching as well. Indeed, as we realised over our chat with
her, creativity knows no limits for this very enterprising lady!
Can you tell us a little about your time at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art & Design in London?
Central Saint Martins College London has a creative energy and being in this hub of knowledge, innovation and discovery, I gained a tremendous amount of design skills and commercial insights. Graduating with a master’s degree in design I have a deeper understanding of not only design but also of the bespoke approach within.
You made your mark in advertising as well. What is the most exciting factor of being part of the mad ad world?
After graduating I was curious to implement my skills in the marketplace and that is how Team Y&R, Dubai happened. I am lucky to have worked with some of the most creative minds in the industry where everyone inspired each other. However the best part of working at Y&R was having Samir Ahmed as my boss. He’s an absolute genius and perfectionist from whom I learnt cutting-edge advertising. Till date I follow his work ethic, “Shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you will land among the stars.”
How did you get into teaching Fine Arts at the American University of Dubai?
I always wanted to be a part of an educational institution and when I saw an opening at the American University of Dubai I grabbed the opportunity to teach art and illustration. I feel teaching is a way of positively impacting the community we live in and I can’t think of anything more rewarding than helping every student find success.
Could you tell us more about your art exhibitions?
From the age of six I started art lessons and thanks to the support of my parents, I continued to pursue what I loved doing most, painting figurative art and portraits. My first exhibition was a group show at the age of 12 and many followed with my last show in Milan a few years ago. These days I manage to paint just a handful but I am hoping in a few years I will have enough for my first
You have been an artist, a teacher and now an entrepreneur. Which role do you enjoy the most?
The role of a mother; I love every moment spent with my twin girls (smiles).
How did you develop an interest in designing diamonds and gems?
I have always loved buying and wearing good jewels, I thought of designing for myself initially. My creations were appreciated by friends and family, so I decided to make it a profession.
How would you describe the woman who wears your jewellery?
There are three words in which I would like to describe her – confident, smart and intriguing.
Do you have any expansion plans for Privé?
Privé came to fruition in March this year. Our goal is to make it the first choice for Arab and Asian women in the UAE for their bridal and social jewellery. Once we cement our brand here, we will plan to move to other GCC countries.
Can you tell us about the synergy you share with your business partner, Sushil Jain?
Sushil, based in India, has been designing and manufacturing jewellery for the past 10 years. We have similar tastes and our work ethics match. His expertise makes the Privé team complete.
Who is your favourite bridal jewellery designer?
I really admire French jeweller Jean Schlumberger’s designs.
Name one Bollywood celebrity who you would love to see wearing your designs?
Sonam Kapoor, she’s got a great sense of style.
Can you describe a typical day in your life?
My day starts early, I drop my girls off to nursery then go to the boutique to meet clients and design. Most days I try to wrap up work before I pick up my daughters and in the evenings I make sure I spend quality time with my husband.
