Another milestone for Aamir's 'Lagaan'
His first home production makes it to Time magazine's list of Top 25 sports films
Aamir Khan's first production 'Lagaan' has yet another honour to its name - it's made it to Time magazine's list of Top 25 sports films.
Made in 2001, the Ashutosh Gowariker directed movie, follows a group of villagers who take on the English rulers of the time in a game of cricket to try and escape a prohibitive tax.
Time magazine called 'Lagaan' the "longest and the most enthralling underdog sports movie ever".
"From the thunderclap in the first torrential rainstorm - a cue for riotous dancing - to the climactic sunlight on the smiling faces of millions of viewers, this Bollywood epic is cause for joy of meteorological proportions," Time magazine went on to say.
The film's "masala mix of melodrama and character comedy" and its music (composed by A R Rahman who would go on to win an Oscar for 'Slumdog Millionaire).
"As sports film, social document or communal ecstasy, Lagaan is the all-time all-rounder," the magazine added.
'Lagaan' is the only Indian movie in the list, making it a novel triumph for Aamir and his team. The film was a bonafide Bollywood blockbuster, though initially it was considered a hugely risky project because of its unusual subject.
