A film on the ugly, yet glamourous, world of betting and match-fixing

by Sheeba Hasan

The Bhatts were quick to capitalise on the mysterious death of Bob Woolmer, coach of Pakistan's cricket team, during the World Cup last year. They subsequently announced Jannat, a film on the ugly, yet glamourous, world of betting and match-fixing.

One year on, the film is ready for release and is scheduled to hit the cinemas on May 2.

In the lead is Bhatt favourite, Emraan Hashmi, cast opposite debutant actress Sonal Chauhan, a former model. It's director Kunal Deshmukh's first film too. He was the assistant director for three Vishesh Films movies: Zeher, Kalyug and Woh Lamhe.

The subject is fresh, the music by Pritam and Kamran Ahmed is outstanding and the promos look sleek and promising, and we are curious to see the full film.

Jannat is the story of Arjun (Emraan Hashmi) who is in addicted to making a fast buck in order to reach ‘heaven on earth'. The route he takes is quick, but corrupt. The reckless young man starts small, from the gambling tables, but the stakes are upped when he becomes a bookie and then a match fixer. Meanwhile, he also falls in love with Zoya (Sonal Chauhan). As he races through dizzying heights of money and power, Arjun finally gets caught in a moral dilemma: the right and wrong of what he's doing, and how far and fast can he go to reach his dream destination, ‘jannat'?

The film is a Mahesh Bhatt presentation and produced by Mukesh Bhatt.
