Oscar 2010 winners
Sandra Bullock and Jeff Bridges triumph, ‘The Hurt Locker’ wins big
The tough soldiers trumped the blue aliens at the Oscars, as war drama ‘The Hurt Locker’ took home six trophies, including Best Picture, Best Director for Kathryn Bigelow, and Best Original Screenplay. The Best Director win made Bigelow the first woman to achieve this honour.
The Best Picture category included 10 movies this year, and ‘The Hurt Locker’ won over films including the blockbuster ‘Avatar’ directed by Bigelow’s ex-husband James Cameron. ‘Avatar’ didn’t do too badly at the Oscars, it won three awards – for Art Direction, Cinematography, and Visual Effects.
There were no surprises in the acting category wins at the Oscars this year; the winners had been collecting trophies at the Golden Globe, SAG, and BAFTA awards.
So Sandra Bullock won Best Actress for her role in ‘The Blind Side’, and well and truly made the crossover from popular actress to acclaimed actress. The actress played a tough yet tender do-gooder in the movie, and she’s just as much of a good sport in real life. Sandra cheerfully accepted a Worst Actress Razzie for her role in ‘All About Steve’ just a day earlier. At the Oscars, she made it a point to thank loved ones including her mom and husband, and even not so loved ones, like everyone who was mean to her
Jeff Bridges won Best Actor for his spot-on performance in 'Crazy Heart', as a washed-up singer trying to change his life choices, with the help of a young journalist. Bridges attended the Oscars with his wife of 33 years, Susan Geston, whom he thanked in his acceptance speech. “I wouldn’t be here without my gorgeous wife and also my three girls,” he said.
Christoph Waltz picked up the Best Supporting Actor award for his turn as the uber villain Col. Hans Landa in 'Inglourious Basterds'. The Austrian actor, who was widely tipped to claim the award, described it as ‘uber bingo’.
Meanwhile, Mo’Nique won Best Supporting Actress for her role as a monstrous bully in 'Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire'. Thanking her ‘Precious’ family and her husband after the win, Mo’Nique was clearly overwhelmed by the win.
Meanwhile, ‘Up’, the wonderfully imaginative tale of adventure, won Best Animated Feature
The movie with the Asian connection, director Gregg Helvey's 19-minute ‘Kavi’, about a young Indian boy who wants to play cricket and go to school, but is forced to work in a brick kiln, lost the best short film, live action Oscar to ‘The New Tenants’.
