Michael Jackson’s doctor may face prison term

Almost eight months after the tragic death of Michael Jackson, a Los Angeles court has charged the King of Pop’s doctor, Conrad Murray with involuntary manslaughter.

Prosecutors have charged Dr Murray with administering a dose of propofol, an anaethetic drug used to tranquilise patients before surgery, causing “acute propofol intoxication” which ultimately led to the singer’s death. He is now facing up to four years in prison but has pleaded not guilty to the charges and maintains his innocence, causing outrage among Michael’s family. Michael’s parents Joe and Katherine believe the doctor was definitely involved in the death of their son, but that he was just one of many people involved in the murder.

She tells reporters, "Michael was murdered and although he died at the hands of Dr. Conrad Murray, I believe Dr. Murray was a part of a much larger plan. There are other individuals involved and I will not rest and I will continue to fight until all of the proper individuals are brought forth and justice is served.”

And while the physician stands trial, representatives for California's Medical Board have requested that he be banned from practicing medicine until the case is resolved. In legal documents filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Monday (Feb 8), Murray is accused of showing "utter disregard for the care and well-being of the persons entrusted to his care.”

The letter continues, “Linda K. Whitney, in her official capacity as the Interim Executive Director of the Medical Board of California, will voluntarily appear before this court... and will recommend that the court issue an order requiring that Conrad Murray, M.D. cease and desist from practicing medicine during the pendency of this criminal action.”
